The officer works for Surrey Police Service, which said in a press release it was releasing information about the arrest “in the interests of transparency”. SPS did not release the officer’s name, age or gender, or any of the details of the alleged crime, except that the officer faces a possible charge of breach of trust, which has not yet been approved by the PC Attorney’s Office. The officer was hired in May 2022 and had just over a year of previous police experience, SPS said. The officer has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation, which is being conducted by Surrey RCMP. CTV News asked the Surrey RCMP for more information on the case, but the detachment declined to provide it, sharing only the following brief statement: “The Surrey RCMP has been made aware of certain information which has led to the initiation of an investigation into an officer within the Surrey Police Service (SPS). This investigation is active and ongoing. SPS has been notified and has initiated its own internal procedures regarding the conduct. We are not is able to provide more information at this time.” The Office of the Commissioner of Police Complaints has also been informed of the incident, according to the Ministry of Health. The SPS is slated to take over the Surrey RCMP sometime after May 2023, although the timeline for the change in command has not yet been finalized, according to the SPS website.
