The deaths occurred in the last 12 years and were related to Rocker from infant to infant or from newborn to infant, according to a statement Tuesday by Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. Expert guidance from doctors and the body says that infants should only sleep on flat surfaces. “No sloping product, made by Fisher-Price or any other company, is safe for baby sleep,” said Mr Troumka. “Only a flat, stable surface is safe.” A different product of the company, a Fisher-Price bed, was recalled in 2019 after being associated with at least 10 deaths. Sleepers and rockers are similar products, said Dr. Ben Hoffman, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ School of Injury, Violence, and Poisoning. They both place the baby on a slope. Babies under 4 months do not have the strength to roll on a flat bed, but the shape of these products allows them. This can cause them to suffocate with the material on both sides, as they can not roll their body on their backs. In addition, the angle of these cradles can obstruct the airways of infants. A Fisher-Price spokesman said in a statement that the safe use of its rockers includes not using them for sleeping, never leaving the child unattended or unrestrained, and not adding bedding. “The product is safe and provides infants and toddlers with a seat to relax and play – both as a rocking chair and as a stool,” the spokesman said. “However, parents and caregivers should not use these products for sleep, never leave infants in these products unattended or unrestrained, and never add bedding material, due to the risk of suffocation.” The panel also included a warning about a Kids 2 rocker on the Minnie Mouse for infants to toddlers, which the panel said was linked to a death. The company did not respond to a request for comment. “This is a tragic reminder of how important it is for babies to sleep soundly,” said Dr. Hoffman. Car seats, when placed at the right angle to a belt, are safe for a baby to fall asleep on, he said. But the same car seat is not recommended when it comes out of its base. “As a parent and pediatrician, I know it’s hard to think of taking a sleeping baby out of a car seat and taking him to an approved sleeping area,” he said. “But this is the recommendation.” UPDATED June 15, 2022, 2:25 p.m. ET In May, Congress passed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which banned the construction and sale of baby sloping bedrooms. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, one of the leading causes of infant death syndrome in the United States, can be caused by unsuitable sleeping conditions, such as the use of a sloping rock. The Rocker Infant-to-Toddler and the Newborn-to-Toddler Rocker have not been recalled, but Mr Trumka said the commission would determine if they were subject to a congressional ban. The 2019 recall included 4.7 million products. The announcement of the 13 infant deaths, which took place between 2009 and 2021, was delayed by two months due to a restriction prohibiting the Commission from disclosing information on consumer products without taking certain measures to ensure its accuracy and fairness. Mr Trumka called on Congress to repeal this “rule of silence”. “Even with Fisher-Price, we have fought a tough battle to make this information public to warn parents and carers,” Trump said. Alex D. Hoehn-Saric, chairman of the safety committee, said the group was continuing to investigate the deaths. A new rule comes into force on June 23 that requires sleeping surfaces to have an angle of 10 degrees or less. “Your baby’s sleeping environment should be the safest place in your home, so we want to remind parents and carers: The best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib. “In a bathtub or playground, without blankets, pillows or other objects,” he said. “Babies should never be unattended or unrestrained on rockers, gliders, pacifiers or cots.”
