A new Texas poll released Wednesday shows that Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke has increased his support by a single-digit lead over Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. O’Rourke, a former El Paso MP who nearly ousted Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2018 Senate election before failing to run for the Democratic nomination in 2020, won the support of 43% of registered voters. in a Quinnipiac University poll. Abbott, the former state attorney general who is running for a third four-year term in office in Texas, had 48% support. Abbott’s 5-point lead over O’Rourke was reduced by a 15-point lead in a Quinnipiac survey conducted in December. The new investigation asked respondents on June 9-13, in the aftermath of the May 24 mass attack on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 young students and two teachers were killed and 17 others injured. The governor led among white voters aged 35 and over, while O’Rourke was among black and Hispanic voters and those aged 18-34, according to the poll. The poll also found that Abbott beats O’Rourke in terms of managing the economy, the coronavirus pandemic, electoral laws and gun policy, although O’Rourke had a slight lead on abortion.
