Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images For the past 10 months, a select parliamentary committee has been investigating last year’s deadly attack on the US Capitol. We are now beginning to learn more about his findings. Monday’s hearing, the second so far, focused on election fraud and the false allegations of former President Donald Trump that the 2020 election had been stolen. Lawmaker Zoe Lofgren said Trump’s “big lie” was also a big parody. He said the commission would show that Trump and his closest advisers “knew the allegations were false, but continued to throw them away anyway before a mob of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021.” There will be seven hearings throughout this month. The first was in prime-time on Thursday and, like Monday, also included invisible footage of the January 6 uprising. Many of them have been recorded by members of Trump’s inner circle, including former Attorney General Bill Barr and former White House Adviser Ivanka Trump. While the commission can not make legal charges against Trump, its central mission was to reveal the full extent of Trump’s unprecedented attempt to stop the transfer of power.
