Round Lake Beach police said a mother who was about to pick up her three children from her estranged husband contacted them around 1:40 p.m. to do a welfare check inside a 200-square-foot E. Camden Lane home in Sutton – subdivision on the lake. When police arrived, they found three children, who were identified at Lake County Medical Examiner’s Office as Bryant Karels, 5, Cassidy Karels, 3, and Gideon Karels, 2. The medical examiner’s office said preliminary autopsies showed he had died of drowning. Police at the scene found that the father, Jason Karels, 35, was missing along with his car, a red Nissan Maxima. Illinois State Police later found the vehicle on the I-57 on 115th Street and launched a high-speed chase that would result in a collision in a wooded area outside the I-80 in Joliet. Police said Karels was taken into custody and told police he was responsible for the deaths. “After the crash, Carels made statements to police officers who were involved in the pursuit and wore cameras carrying his body, indicating that he was responsible for the deaths of children in the home of Lake Lake Beach,” said Road Police Chief Lake Lake Beach. , Gilbert Rivera. “He also said he tried to commit suicide several times after the children died, but was unsuccessful during those attempts. Police declined to comment, but said Karels and the children’s mother were estranged and may have shared custody of the children. “I do not know if anything could stop it or if there were early indications of this,” said Rivera. “As I said, we were not familiar with this family or the house.” Karels, who remains in hospital, has been charged with three counts of murder. Authorities say his condition has stabilized and he is expected to be released from hospital soon. A Go FundMe has been set up to benefit victims. Copyright © 2022 WLS-TV. All rights reserved.
