The race for governor between the Democratic incumbent and her Republican predecessor is expected to be one of the closest to Maine’s general election, with Mills maintaining a slight lead over LePage in the recent poll. Independent Sam Hunkler, a retired doctor from the Beals, is also on the ballot in a race that will not use the Maine elective ranking system. U.S. lawmaker Jared Golden, a Democrat from the 2nd District of Maine, also moves in November without question. Independent lawyer Tiffany Bond will also be on the ballot. Former United States MP Bruce Poliquin has to go through the Republican primary with Caratunk Liz Caruso to get a rematch of the 2018 defeat by Golden. In the 1st District of Maine, for seven terms, U.S. Republican MP Chellie Pingree also faced no candidates. She will defend her position against Ed Thelander, the retired Navy SEAL from Bristol, who unquestionably won the Republican nomination. Several hundred candidates for legislative and prefectural offices also ran in the November elections. Only 32 of the 349 ballots in Tuesday’s ballot across Maine were contested.
