The young boy’s body was found in the Scugog River, near Lindsay, Ont., After leaving home about 24 hours earlier. Draven Graham, who lived with autism, slipped out of the house while his father shaved on Sunday morning. This was the last time he was seen.
Following the catastrophic series, Kat Reid, from Hamilton, OD, created an application to create a “Draven Alert” for “lost autistic and vulnerable children / children with disabilities.”
At the moment, Amber Alert is an emergency show specifically dedicated to seeking public help when a child is abducted.
“The Amber Alert version is not taken seriously. “Specific instructions must be followed to distribute an Amber Alert,” said the Ontario Provincial Police website.
These guidelines include enforcing the law that a child under the age of 18 is believed to have been abducted, being in danger, descriptive information being available, and then issuing a brief notice to help locate the child.
But when Graham went missing, there was no Amber Alert because he was not abducted.
However, more than 30,000 people want to change this for future occasions like this.
“The more awareness and attention we can bring to it while it is still fresh in everyone’s mind, the better. “Unfortunately, the whole advertising campaign goes out VERY quickly in these situations, nothing changes and then the list of tragic endings continues to grow,” Reid wrote in the report.
“This must happen,” wrote Milton’s Ryan Rubenstein. “If even one life is saved as a result, it is worth it. Be strong..be crazy..this is a tragedy, but also LISTEN. The more people sign, the louder our voice becomes. Thanks to anyone who signed or shared. “
On its website, police say that if Amber Alerts is used too much, it could “reduce the response of the public when it is really needed”.
An Amber Alert is enabled in this undated file image.
Others, meanwhile, are urging the petition to go one step further to include people over the age of 18. Racehl Laroque from Woodbridge, Ont., Writes, “Please note that autism does not end at 18 and make sure they are autistic / vulnerable adults and the elderly are also included in this notice.”
The petition is working to reach 35,000 signatures.
