The federal government is going to suspend COVID-19 vaccination requirements for domestic air and train travel, as well as for people departing by air from Canada. The government will also stop mandating vaccinations for federal officials, according to those familiar with the matter, whom The Globe does not name because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The suspension follows a move by the government on Sunday to temporarily stop vaccinating travelers on a random COVID-19 test. Unvaccinated travelers arriving outside of Canada should be tested. Passengers should answer health questions and wear masks on board while not eating or drinking. The order for the vaccine could be re-imposed if required by a new variant, a source said. The government is expected to make the announcement at a press conference at 13.00 ET on Tuesday. Airports, airlines and the travel industry say COVID-19 rules are exacerbating staff shortages at a time when air travel is recovering, leading to long delays at airport customs, luggage and security checkpoints. Three public sector unions had lodged complaints against the order, saying it was no longer justified. More follow.
