The second airlift of Ukrainian refugees to Newfoundland arrives in St. John’s later today. Approximately 165 Ukrainians are scheduled to arrive today, all of whom have been granted emergency travel visas allowing them to live and work in Canada for up to three years. The refugees arriving from Warsaw, Poland will also receive coverage under the provincial prescription drug plan. Most of the newcomers will be transported to pre-arranged accommodations in the St. John’s area to rest and adjust to their new surroundings while others will stay with family and friends throughout the province. Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne has been in contact with the previous group of Ukrainian refugees and they’ve told him they’re here to stay. He’s had the opportunity to spend days with new Ukrainian arrivals who he says are building a local community in Newfoundland and Labrador and are “very grateful” to be here.
